The Story Behind Tulsi Vivah

Tulsi wedding, the solemn marriage of the Tulsi plant (holy basil) to Lord Vishnu is held in the month of Kartik in the Indian calendar. It is mentioned in Padma Purana and other ancient scriptures. This ceremony is performed between Prabodhini Ekadashi and Kartik Purnima, i.e. anytime in October or November. The actual days of tulsi vivah differ from one region to another. The tulsi plant is a variety of herbs known as basil. The festival known as Tulsi and Tusli Vivaha is a beautiful symbolic story that resonates even today.

Tulsi Vivah Katha

According to ancient scriptures, a demon called Jalandhar threatened the gods. Jalandhar's wife, Vrinda, is known as a devoted wife. His steadfast loyalty prevented Jalandhar from losing the war. Besides devotion to her husband, Vrinda is also devoted to Lord Vishnu. Vrinda's devotion is broken due to divine deception. A fierce battle ensued. The gods asked Vishnu for help. Vishnu wanted to help them, but could not kill Jalandhar because of his promise to his wife Lakshma, whom he considered his brother. Thus, Deva was defeated by Asuras (demons) and Jalandhar became the king of heaven, earth and pataal (net universe).

Knowing that Jalandhar cannot be defeated without breaking Vrinda's devotion, Lord Vishnu assumed the form of Jalandhar. As a result, Vrinda's commitment was broken. Jalandhar was defeated in the battle and died as he lost all his senses. Vrinda was very sad to hear of Jalandhar's death. Knowing this act of lying, he cursed Lord Vishnu, "Just as I was deceived in my love affairs, so will your wife be deceived." He also said that Lord Vishnu will transform into what people will recognize as Shaligram. Due to the curse of Vrinda, Lord Vishnu is said to have taken the form of Dasharath's son Shri Ram. Later, he had to endure the pain of separation from Sita when she was kidnapped.

Celebrating Tulsi Vivah

The married women keep a fast and perform the Tulsi vivah for the well-being of husband and members of the family. The daughterless couples pay for the arrangements so that they may get the punya of kanyadaan. Widows cannot take part in these celebrations. The vivah takes place at homes, temples and with changing times in halls and hotels as well. Changing times have changed our thinking also. The blatant patriarchy in this myth, which gives the women a secondary status becomes obvious. Jalandhar’s power is because of Vrinda’s chastity. Vrinda can pray for him, but why cannot she dissuade him from following the wrong path? And mere touching Vishnu’s feet shatters her chastity! And she must immolate herself in the fire! Myths should be accepted as myths and taken with a pinch of salt.
