About Legend Goddess Kaalratri

Saptami (7th day) marks the main day of rituals for the deity of power. Mythology says that after a fierce battle that lasted for 9 days, the gods defeated the most treacherous demon in history - Mahishasura. Saptami is the 10th day, Dussehra when the gods begin their battle with the bull demon.

According to legend, Dasta Shumbha-Nishumbha and Raktabeej made a stroke in all three countries. Worried by this, all the gods went to Shiva Ji. Lord Shiva asked Parvati to kill the demons and protect his devotees. Mindful of Lord Shiva, Parvati assumes the form of Goddess Durga and kills Shumbha-Nishumbha. But as soon as Durga kills the blood, the blood that comes out of her body produces millions of raktabeej. Seeing this, Durga Ji made Kalaratri fast. Later, when Durga was killed by a raktabeej, Kaalratri splashed her blood on her face and slaughtered her bloody base after slitting her throat.

Lord Kalaratri is worshipped today with night-blooming jasmine flowers. Offerings of flowers, sindoor, kajal, bangles, bindis, anklets, mirrors, and anklets are made for the deity. Milk, plums, and honey are offered to the idol of Lord Kalaratri. In the end, Aarti is performed and prasad is distributed among the needy. To worship the deity, food from the soup is offered to Maa Kaalratri as prasad.
